Ottmar Heinsius von Mayenburg (1865 - 1932)

In 1907, the chemist, OTTOMAR HEINSIUS von MAYENBURG (1865 - 1932) developed Chlorodont toothpaste in a small laboratory in the attic of the "Löwen" chemist's in Dresden. Twenty years later it was the world's leading brand and the Dresden "Leo-Werke" stood confidently at the forefront of the German dental industry.
1907 The Leo laboratory is founded in the attic of the "Löwen" chemist’s in Dresden's Old Marketplace by the pharmacist and chemist Dr. Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg. Chlorodont toothpaste - the first machine-made toothpaste contained in metal tubes - is developed.
1917 The "Leo-Werke" company is established in Dresden-Neustadt where DENTAL- Kosmetik GmbH &Co.KG is located today The company at this time has 60 employees.

1924 The "Leo-Werke" company becomes Europes´ largest toothpaste manufacturer with a the staff of 1,000 and 27 subsidiaries in Germany, Europe, and overseas. Manufacturing programme: Oral and dental care products, cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations (the famous Leo Cream and Leo Pills among others).

1939-1945 Production continues during the war. The public is educated with regard to proper dental care within the scope of public health activities.
Feb. 1945 The "Leo-Werke" company is severely damaged in the air raids on Dresden.
Nov. 1945 Production is resumed in the main works in Dresden and the company reconstructed step by step.
1952 The company becomes a state-owned enterprise and is renamed VEB Elbe-Chemie.

1952-1989 The company is active as a facility specializing in oral and dental health care products in the German Democratic Republic.
1990 The company is reorganized as Dental Kosmetik GmbH Dresden. It is managed by the "Berlin Treuhandanstalt". Modern production plants are commissioned.
May 1st 1992 The company is reprivatized: sole proprietor is the Munich-based ARGENTA International Investment Company mbH. [www.argenta.de]
